Personal Photography Zines// New Adjustments & Belly Band

New Adjustments to Page Two

The new adjustments to page two only took an hour or so. I was unhappy with the outcome of this page on all zines because of how I spoke about my work. There were also some typos that mean't I would have to reprint everything, which is extremely frustrating as it is a very long process.

Page two is very similar to page one, the front cover in that its been laminated and has vinyl. It looks nice as a page two as well. Theres no information at all but I like this. It let the pictures speak for themselves without giving too much away, it lets the person looking at the photos make up their own story.

The belly band didn't take long and holds all the books together nicely, I got some feedback too and it was decided that the black example works better as its simple and the text on the white example causes much too much text with the books. I am yet to decide what to do about packaging. I like the idea of making a small box of sorts to hold them.

George Simms Photography// First meeting about Promotional Pack.

Design Sheets

Primary Research// Objective

The back above is basically what George and I want to achieve. From the design sheets you will see that we want a leaflet, maybe too, and a business card. The leaflet and business card will come in a see through envelope made from layout paper. George and I plan to hand make these and make about 50 in total. This will be a difficult process but we want to make as many as possible so George doesn't run out at any time during the exhibition!

The next plan will be to find a nice font for Georges business card and leaflets, this font will then go ahead to be used on his website and in all be his identity. You can see the 'Gost' example above and its this sort of thing George wants to have.

Email.

Hi Simon,

thanks for helping me do my branding and self promo material!

just some initial ideas:

I was thinking for the end of year show, having a simple business card, with just my name and contact details (i have examples i can show you), also post-card type thing with an explanation on the back of it that people can take away? i have also thought about maybe some small prints people can take away too?

Be good to know what you’re thinking!

Response:

Hi George,

No problem I look forward to it!

I think the business card and postcard/ leaflet is a great idea for the exhibition. For the exhibition it will be nice to have an envelope of sorts that the business card and leaflet can go into, so people can take both together in a nice package. Let me know what you think!

Would it be ok if you sent me a selection of photos that I can play around with for the leaflet? Also we should meet sometime next week to run through my initial ideas.

Thanks!

Simon

The Outsiders// Book Mock Up

Book for mock up.

Front & back: 12.9cm
Spine: 1.4cm
Length: 19.7cm

Surprisingly the book cover was already the right size so that made the process pretty easy! I did however make the spine a bit bigger sp that when it comes to putting everything together I will be able to avoid error.

Personal Photography Zines// Feedback & New Zine Ideas

I went to a friend to get some feedback about the zines as I have decided to reprint them. The language and text is not suitable for a zine. It should be cut down massively. Simply just have a tiny bit about the book and my name. Nothing about what I do as a photographer.

...............................................................................................................................................

Feedback.

The feedback has been good and I want to go ahead with what I have been told.

  • The first thing is to change the text and take out the 'about' section. All I will have is a tiny bit of information about what will be in the zine.
  • The outer cover will not have my name on it. All it will have is the title about the zine, for example 'barcelona' or 'italy'.
Apart from these two points that is all that will change is the zines. Very simple but I will have to spend an awful amount of time redoing them! I will have to go to drop in to which is a very long process.

...............................................................................................................................................

Vinyl.

Above will be the new vinyl for the front cover, its clean, simple, and will look great when finished. I took away 'photography' because its sounds to official which I don't like too much.
Other zines I have looked at don't have photography in the title. I think its pretty obvious once opening the book what the content will be!

I've taken out all of the text and it will instead be the same as the front cover. I feel much more comfortable with this decision and I look forward to what it will look like!

NEW

NO Name

I have decied that i will not have my name at all on the front cover, just the name of the book and the number out of the zines. The inside will instead have my name, along with the name of the zine and the zine number out of four.

Personal Photography Zines// Printed Books

The front cover has been laminated and underneath that the text has been done with vinyl. The result is very effective and I am so happy it has worked with no error. There have been errors in the book, but that was most defiantly predictable.

In order to get the front cover on the book I used double sided tape and the process on the whole was very successful. The double sided tape was very forgiving in that if I made an error I could easily start again. If this wasn't the case my books would have looked dreadful.

I am very happy with the final outcome but there have been one or two errors in the zines that make me want to start over as there are deeply frustrating. Number one is the language in the zines. I spent so long trying to write it that the tone of voice is not like mine and its very embarrassing almost. So much that I want to start again. However the whole process takes a very long time.

Number two is there are some spelling mistakes, something I like to do a lot in my work. I have a photo shoot on wednesday so I could redo the books if I go to drop in. It won't be easy though. It really does annoy me that the books aren't perfect. The printing and construction couldn't have gone better but the language an typos need to be looked at and redone.

I plan to get some feedback from some photographers as I want the language to be perfect and professional. I feel the language needs to be cut down. Let the photos speak for themseleves. At the moment there is alot to read, too much maybe.

Personal Photography Zines// Books ready for print.

Introduction in each zine.

My photography is a mixture of documentary and experimental. I use a Canon AE-1 which, because of its age, is prone to light leaks when the outer case isn’t attached. Therefore, the choice is there for a crisp and clean photo or an unpredictable one.

I hope for the unexpected, whether they be light leaks or general mistakes that create something different and more visually interesting. I enjoy taking double exposures; this is possible by tricking the camera that the film has been wound on. My love for film has grown from waiting for the unexpected.

I hope you like what you see and I’m grateful you have shown an interest in my work. The photos presented throughout these 4 zines reflect my most memorable events between June and November 2013.

Book 1/4: Barcelona

During August, eight friends and myself headed to Barcelona for our second trip in two years to continue filming for our second video for Cidy Life, a skate project.

This zine is a small selection of the photos I took during the ten days. We tended to look for new spots, hoping to film new and exclusive material; as a result, we seemed to be by ourselves for much of the time. This is most probably the most memorial and exciting trip I have been on to date; I look forward to the next time we go out.

Book 2/4: Brighton

These photos were taken over one weekend in Brighton during July. They simply show a normal weekend for me with my friends. The only difference being the extrodenary weather we were blessed with. In these set of photos the outercae of the AE-1 was kept on to void any light leaks.

Book 3/4: Italy

In the west of Italy lies Tuscany, where I had the delight of enjoying one week in late June. My family and I stayed in the quiet and scenic hills of Monterchi, an hour or from Florence. The villa had been recently refurbished by a family friend and was miles from other dwellings; it was instead surrounded by farm land and beautiful ruins.

During this time all my film received a rather heavy dosage of light, resulting in roughly a mere twenty legible photos from four films. However, this did lead to some lovely patterns, such as this example to the right.

Book 4/4: Harlaxton

One weekend in early November, I spent a weekend in Harlaxton, which is situated just 15 minutes outside Grantham in Lincolnshire. There is so much to this rural village, from its breathtaking countryside to its historic stone built houses.

My history here goes back to when I was born, when my grandparents lived here; this location means a lot to me. I spent the weekend experimenting mainly with double exposures. With the light and scenery offered to me at this location, I was able to capture some rather unique photos along with some new colours I haven’t seen before in my work.

WPP// Website After Effects

It was great to have Luke when it came to after effects because for some reason how to use it after being taught the basics didn't stick in my head at all. A friend was around to help us with the basics and Luke was very quick to pick it up. From there it was a matter of getting it ready to put into the final video.

Above are some screen shoots of the process we went though in making the website ready for the video.
