Contacting Studios for Brief Advice

When thinking about what sort of work I wanted to produce for the 8 briefs I am to indeity and complete this term, I talked to a friend Lewis Smith who works for Anorak magazine. He said it would be worth contacting studios to see what work they set their interns, and in lige of this was kind enough to give me a line of close contacts to him.

"...I would just ask them what they would tend to set their interns that isn't client work. ( maybe if there is some downtime, but they want to keep them busy/ see what they are capable of).
So here is my list of people:
1. Gemma from Well Made (she's in charge of the running of the studio/ new business/ all of the blog stuff/ client liaison stuff (the good studio in Liverpool).
http://wellmadestudio.com/ gemma@wellmadestudio.com
2. Cathy (owner of anorak) although she doesn't get a lot of interns, would be worth asking her if she did, what kinda stuff would she set them. Maybe something like a new mag, she always needs something doing!
anorakmagazine.com cathy@anorakmagazine.com
3. Matt (good digital studio in east) Always has interns, i interned there too. Really good at getting them involved. Worth a shout, he is always mega busy though. Also worth noting that the brief Matt would give you, would probs be something digital.
Matt@sennep.com
4. Claire Vickers (senior designer at innocent) Packaging obviously but they do lots of other cool stuff. Don't get a lot of interns but worth seeing what she says. She's great.
claire.vickers@innocentdrinks.co.uk
Mention me in the email and hopefully they will get back to you. They are all super busy though, so worth covering as many studios as you can. Also don't send them all the same email. Take the time to comment on something about their work/studio, make it personal. The last thing they'd want is a dear sir/madam email. keep it light!
Here are some other studios that are good/ but i don't know people there personally.
http://www.studio-output.com/get-in-touch - do a lot of ministry of sound stuff and playstation.
http://www.humanafterall.co.uk/ - used to do magazines for the church of london (little white lies, huck etc)
http://www.appliedworks.co.uk/contact/ - small studio in hoxton square.
More will come to me, just don't want to reel you off a list of ones that wont get back to you! Will have a think and send more later.
Hope this helps, defo look on the creative review blog, and when a studio is credited for something find out their email!
in a bit!!..."

Hi Gemma,

I am currently studying at Leeds college of Art and about to take part in my third year of graphic design. Our target for the first term is to locate 8 briefs of our choice and complete them.
A friend of mine Lewis Smith, said it would be worth contacting you as this would vary the final outcomes in my work.

I contact you to ask what work you would tend to set your interns that isn't client work? Maybe if there is some downtime but you want to keep them busy or see what they are capable of.
I very much like the look of the work on Well Made, especially the rebranding of the studios and the Tuebrook Transnational. I am very much into editorial based work and I enjoyed reading about the re-writing of Tuebrook, especially how printing on a free community tabloid newspaper let you focus more on different aspects of the layout and content.

Many thanks and I hope to hear from you soon!

Best Regards,

Simon Isles

Claire Vickers, Senior Designer at Innocent

Hi Claire,

I am currently studying at Leeds college of Art and about to embark on my third year of graphic design. Our target for the first term is to locate 8 briefs of our choice and complete them. Lewis Smith is a friend of mine and said it would be worth contacting you.

I contact you to ask what work you would tend to set your interns that isn't client work? Maybe if there is some downtime but you want to keep them busy or see what they are capable of. I'm very much interested in the packaging and branding of Innocent Drinks and would like to do a brief for you as part of my uni module. This obviously wouldn't be a paid job or in fact a job for the company, just something that would help me vary the final outcomes in my work. Once finished I would very much like to show you and get some feedback!

Many Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon,

Best Regards,

Simon Isles

Hi Simon

Thanks for getting in touch and lots of luck with your final year of studies.

We would always give interns here proper work to do, it's the only way you learn – by having a go. Off the top of my head a good brief for you to have a go at would be to design a back of pack for us. If you have a look at any of our smoothie cartons in store, we always leave one panel to have some fun with and engage with our consumers. Sometimes we tell people about our products, sometimes they are more random.

I've attached the packaging nets for a couple of examples so you can see what space you have to play with. There's also some examples of packs we've done throughout the years here: http://www.innocentdrinks.co.uk/bored/our-packaging

Coming up with the random ones is good fun, but if you wanted a more 'straight' brief I'd say think about how we can communicate how good our products taste on pack.

I hope that's enough to be getting on with, I'm happy to have a look at what you come up with later on in the year.

Thanks

Claire

Hi James,

As you know I am just about to take part in my third year of Graphic Design at Leeds College of Art. My goal is to identify and complete 8 briefs this term and after completing a week at your studio I was very much interested in the work you were producing. Might you have any old briefs that you have completed in the past that I could have a go at? I am very much into editorial based work, working with layout, text and image, as well as different print processes.

I would very much like to do a brief for ifour for this up and coming module and your help would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks and I hope to hear from you soon

Best Regards,

Simon Isles
