Introduction in each zine.
My photography is a mixture of documentary and experimental. I use a Canon AE-1 which, because of its age, is prone to light leaks when the outer case isn’t attached. Therefore, the choice is there for a crisp and clean photo or an unpredictable one.
I hope for the unexpected, whether they be light leaks or general mistakes that create something different and more visually interesting. I enjoy taking double exposures; this is possible by tricking the camera that the film has been wound on. My love for film has grown from waiting for the unexpected.
I hope you like what you see and I’m grateful you have shown an interest in my work. The photos presented throughout these 4 zines reflect my most memorable events between June and November 2013.
Book 1/4: Barcelona
During August, eight friends and myself headed to Barcelona for our second trip in two years to continue filming for our second video for Cidy Life, a skate project.
This zine is a small selection of the photos I took during the ten days. We tended to look for new spots, hoping to film new and exclusive material; as a result, we seemed to be by ourselves for much of the time. This is most probably the most memorial and exciting trip I have been on to date; I look forward to the next time we go out.
Book 2/4: Brighton
These photos were taken over one weekend in Brighton during July. They simply show a normal weekend for me with my friends. The only difference being the extrodenary weather we were blessed with. In these set of photos the outercae of the AE-1 was kept on to void any light leaks.
Book 3/4: Italy
In the west of Italy lies Tuscany, where I had the delight of enjoying one week in late June. My family and I stayed in the quiet and scenic hills of Monterchi, an hour or from Florence. The villa had been recently refurbished by a family friend and was miles from other dwellings; it was instead surrounded by farm land and beautiful ruins.
During this time all my film received a rather heavy dosage of light, resulting in roughly a mere twenty legible photos from four films. However, this did lead to some lovely patterns, such as this example to the right.
Book 4/4: Harlaxton
One weekend in early November, I spent a weekend in Harlaxton, which is situated just 15 minutes outside Grantham in Lincolnshire. There is so much to this rural village, from its breathtaking countryside to its historic stone built houses.
My history here goes back to when I was born, when my grandparents lived here; this location means a lot to me. I spent the weekend experimenting mainly with double exposures. With the light and scenery offered to me at this location, I was able to capture some rather unique photos along with some new colours I haven’t seen before in my work.
